We used to say “the bee’s knees” to a person or something that was wonderful, great, or marvellous. And as a matter of fact there is truly something magnificent about the bees in themselves. Let’s look at the most popular kind — the honey bees.
These tiny creatures travel an average of 1600 round trips (9.6km each) in order to produce 30 grammes (1 ounce) of honey. It means that to produce 2 pounds (0.9kg) of honey, the bees need to travel a distance equal to 4 times around the earth.
And there is something else magical about the bees, the product of their labour — the sweet and healthy substance we all love – the honey. Btw: did you know that sealed honey doesn’t go off, even after thousand years?
It’s because most microorganisms do not grow in honey. However be careful. Sometimes it might contain dormant endospores of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which can be dangerous to babies and result in botulism.
